There is a certain satisfaction is resurrecting a cherished item from the depths of our storage rooms, attics, and basements. Many of us have treasured items stored away that we’ve had on our refinishing to-do list for ever.
We like to showcase the many different ways you can utilize an ultrasonic cleaner to help with the many restoration and maintenance projects you have. For today’s example one of our team members dug through decades of stored items to bring out an old cherished stereo system. As these types of components fetch a pretty penny for good condition models he wanted to bring his own vintage amp back to life.
The biggest challenge in a refinishing project is dealing with poorly stored items and the ramifications of years of dust and grime accumulating on those treasured items. Sadly this item was tucked away in a garage which dealt with heavy dust and fluctuations in humidity that lead to a grimy dusty layer forming on the surface.
In the case of electronic components such as those in an amplifier it would not be appropriate to use water to clean them. There are however many metal and plastic pieces such as knobs and switches that have perforations and fine details that fill up with dust and grime which can be difficult to clean. Additionally, you would want to avoid harsh solvents and chemicals that could ruin the finishes on those vintage materials.
For this project the Magnasonic Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaner was used. Due to the intense amount of grime in all the crevices the cleaning cycling was ran numerous times. The cleaning was done using only tap water. After a few rounds the knobs were sparkling! They would look like new if wasn’t for some of the wear to the finish that occurred over years of using this product.
After finishing the faceplate with a little clean and a paint job on the cabinet this stereo receiver came back to life to deliver some satisfying tunes.
